Board of Directors
Riccardo was appointed to the Retina Australia board in 2023. He is an Associate Professor at the Australian National University (ANU) and is the Associate Director of Research Development for the newly formed ANU School of Medicine and Psychology (SMP), where his role is to develop and implement a research strategy to grow current and emerging research priorities. In addition, Riccardo is the Head of Clear Vision Research Group at the John Curtin School of Medical Research (JCSMR), ANU. He also leads an internationally recognised research program to reduce the severity and progression of retinal degenerations with a focus on Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
As a researcher, Riccardo brings an understanding of the fundamental biology that underpins retinal degenerations and the perspective of new emerging technologies which can impact patients’ lives. He also provides a connection to developing emerging national and international research programs and technologies with industry partners.
He is passionate in supporting Retina Australia in their grants program. Having been awarded funding from Retina Australia previously as an Early Career Researcher (ECR), Riccardo knows the impact that this funding has on junior researchers and the importance of supporting fundamental research in developing improved health outcomes to patients.
