OUR VISION IS FOR A WORLD WITHOUT INHERITED BLINDNESS
Inherited retinal diseases result in progressive, irreversible and incurable blindness.
They are the leading cause of blindness in working age adults and the second leading cause of blindness in children, 1
The total estimated lifetime cost for each person living with an inherited retinal disease is $5.2 million, of which 87% are societal and 13% health care related costs. 2
BUT THERE IS HOPE
There is now one treatment, a gene therapy.
Although it is only suitable for a rare type of inherited retinal disease associated with the RPE65 gene with less than 15 people in Australia having the treatment to date, it has opened up a new area of understanding and paved the way for treatments to be developed for other types of inherited retinal disease.
With more clinical trials now underway and with continued innovative research, together we can find those treatments faster.
Your donation will help Retina Australia continue to fund critical research into inherited retinal disease and enable us to keep you in touch with the latest research developments. Every donation helps, thank you for your support.
