Associate Professor Anai Gonzalez-Cordero is the Unit Head of Stem Cell Medicine at the Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI), The University of Sydney. Anai is an academic researcher with over a decade of expertise in inherited retinal diseases and stem cells. Her background in stem cell biology and regenerative medicine influences her research programs in human development, disease modelling, and advanced therapeutics, including cell and gene therapies.

Having started her scientific career in the UK, she obtained a Wellcome Trust PhD in Stem Cell and Developmental Biology and continued her work at the Institute of Ophthalmology, University College London. In 2019, she relocated to Australia to continue her research in stem cells and ophthalmology. Anai also heads the Stem Cell and Organoid Facility at CMRI and is a founding member of various initiatives in the area of stem cells and novel approach methodologies, including the NSW Organoid Innovation Centre and the NSW Non-Animal Technologies Network (Nat-Net).

Anai is also a strong supporter and advocate for public engagement and believes that patient involvement at all levels of research is crucial to guiding novel discoveries.
