Inherited Retinal Diseases, the role of genetic testing and potential future treatments

Hosted by Retina Australia   |   October 2022

Watch the webinar here

Retina Australia is delighted to have the support of Janssen, who have recently provided generous support for capacity building including assistance toward the development of a new website and the implementation of a new database system that has transformed the way we are able to interact with our members. This webinar provides an opportunity for our members to hear about their work in research, testing, and treatment efforts for those living with inherited retinal disease.

Inherited Retinal Diseases, the role of genetic testing and potential future treatments

Presenter: Marija McGeachie – Senior Medical Advisor

Marija McGeachie holds a PhD in Medicine from the University of Sydney, and her PhD work focused on identifying genetic causes and molecular characterisation of inherited eye disorders. Following completion of her PhD, Marija then undertook a postdoctoral appointment at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology in London, where in close association with experts from the Moorfields Eye Hospital, she developed gene therapies for Inherited Retinal Dystrophies. Since her return from the UK in 2012, Marija has held numerous roles in Medical Affairs within the industry, both at Alcon and Johnson & Johnson. Marija is currently the Senior Medical Advisor looking after Janssen’s Leukaemia and Lymphoma portfolios, as well as the pipeline Ophthalmology portfolio.

The importance of engaging people in their health care to improve outcomes

Presenter: Felicity Sawford – Patient Engagement Manager

At Janssen, the Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson, we work tirelessly to make a future without disease a reality for patients by fighting sickness with science, improving access with ingenuity, and healing hopelessness with heart.

We focus on areas of medicine where we can make the biggest difference: Cardiovascular & Metabolism, Retina, Immunology, Infectious Diseases & Vaccines, Neuroscience, Oncology, and Pulmonary Hypertension.

For Janssen, it is not just about leading innovation and driving medical breakthroughs. We go beyond the medicine by working with patients through the entire process to ensure the best possible experience and health outcomes. We are driven by our belief that “patients are waiting” and there is no time to waste.
