Fred Chen is a clinician researcher in inherited retinal diseases. He is a Principal Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia and a Clinical Associate Professor at University of Melbourne.  He was awarded a PhD from University College London in retinal cell transplantation for treatment of retinal degenerations. Upon return to Perth in 2011, he established the Ocular Tissue Engineering Laboratory at Lions Eye Institute to develop personalised gene-based and drug treatment for ocular genetic diseases. He is a principal investigator for several clinical trials in novel drugs for various forms of inherited retinal diseases. His research team has been supported by NHMRC funding for the last 10 years. He and his collaborators at Murdoch University and PYC Therapeutics have co-invented and developed an antisense oligonucleotide for the treatment of PRPF31-associated retinitis pigmentosa.

Fred consults at Royal Perth Hospital, Perth Children’s Hospital, Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. He is the current co-Editor-in-Chief for Clinical Experimental Ophthalmology, a Section Editor for British Journal of Ophthalmology and on the Editorial Board for Ophthalmic Genetics and Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology.
